CTS staff have over seven years of experience in developing online curriculum resources and teaching materials at Rice. Experience includes work with pre-web era collaborative tools such as the Virtual Notebook System and web development since 1993. A member of the CTS staff developed and taught the three-credit hour university course "Modeling, Rendering and Animation in Architecture" (ARCH 440/640) from 1993 to 1995. The staff are experienced with: HTML coding and web page design, image digitization and manipulation, audio and video digitization, manipulation and delivery, basic perl cgi scripting, web-database interaction via ColdFusion, online course management tools (OWL-Space), searchable image databases through Portfolio Server, and vector-based content creation with Macromedia Flash. Examples of projects developed by the current CTS staff are shown below:
HART 350: American Architecture & Decorative Arts
SHISHA VAN HORN & DR. JOSEPH MANCA
SEARCHABLE IMAGE DATABASE
SPRING 2000Study images were made available to students via a campus-wide Portfolio Image Catalog Server. Images can be searched by Title, Creator, Location, or various other fields and keywords. They can be viewed as thumbnail images, full-sized images with image identification or as part of an online slide show.
- Searchable image database
- Instructor editsimage information via client software
- Password-protected access from the web
- Instructor can create online slideshows
Multimedia Architecture Database /
ARCH 346 History of Modern Architecture
SHISHA VAN HORN & DR. JOHN BILN
EXTENSIBLE, SEARCHABLE DATABASE OF ARCHITECTURAL WORKS
DEVELOPED 1999-2000, IN USEThis web-based database of architectural works was developed for the School of Architecture to explore three specific goals: 1) the information entered should be in a form usable by several different classes; 2) the information should be easily entered and maintained by the content specialists (the architects); and 3) the information should support learning and searching for information in a variety of ways.
- Web-based database application developed using ColdFusion
- Database records added and edited via web
- Project currently includes over 600 architectural works, 800 images, and 40 text articles
- Overlay of course-specific information separated from the "canonical" data
- Designed to be expanded for Internet-wide usage
Technology-Enhanced Beginning Spanish Project
SHISHA VAN HORN & DR. GRACIELA DAICHMAN
FOREIGN LANGUAGE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
DEVELOPED 1997-1999, IN USEA project created to enhance learning of beginning Spanish through the use of multimedia and online web resources. The project consists of 52 companion units to be used in conjunction with the Destinos spanish language curriculum. Streaming audio and video clips expose students to the sounds and cadence of native speakers, custom learning tools (a multimedia clock and thermometer) were created for teaching time and temperature, exercises and quizzes are submitted via the web, and hundreds of links to online resources around the world enhance the students' exposure to Spanish-language culture.
- Streaming audio and video files
- Custom QuickTime VR learning tools (clock & thermometer)
- Exercise submission originally handled by perl cgi-scripting
- Outside links add breadth and depth to topics covered
The Rice West Eugene Wetlands Project
SHISHA VAN HORN & DR. LINDA DRISKILL
RESOURCE ARCHIVE WITH RELATED COURSE MATERIALS
DEVELOPED 1996, IN USEThe Rice West Eugene Wetlands Project was designed to offer a wide range of documents related to a real-life case of successful conflict resolution involving wetlands discovered in west Eugene, Oregon. The original materials are provided online as a starting place for many different types of learning activities. Among other projects, the materials are used in the Jones Graduate School of Management as background materials for a role-playing exercise on conflict resolution.
- Searchable collection of original source materials
- Suggested learning activities at K-12 and high educational levels
- Funding currently being sought to merge these materials with the local wetlands site
Tsoungiza-Nemea Archaeological Model
SHISHA VAN HORN & DR. REBECCA MERSEREAU
DIGITAL MODEL OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE FOR RESEARCH
1994Data from one excavation unit of Nemea Valley Archaeological Project (begun in 1984) was digitized to create a three-dimensional computer model of the excavation to see to what extent it could be valuable too researchers in examining the data collected. The project was presented at the "Imaging the Past: Electronic Imaging and Computer Graphics in Museums and Archaeology" at the British Museum, November, 1994.
- Data exported from Excel spreadsheets directly into AutoCAD
- Three-dimensional model created in AutoCAD
- Rendering executed in 3D Studio
- Flythrough animation output to video tape using Alias/Wavefront
HART 345: Renaissance & Baroque Architectural History
SHISHA VAN HORN & DR. WALTER WIDRIG
IMAGE STUDY GUIDE
DEVELOPED 1993-96, IN USEThis collection of over 1700 high-resolution images of Renaissance and baroque architecture was originally developed before the use of the World Wide Web at Rice. It was converted from the Virtual Notebook System to the current web-based version in 1995. The 1700 images are organized by lecture, architect, and location.
- Images available in small and large versions with image identification
Web-based course resource page utility
SHISHA VAN HORN
UTILITY FOR COURSE WEB PAGES
2000This web-based utility is designed to make it easy for faculty to maintain an up-to-date listing of resources for their courses without having to learn how to create web pages. Resources can be added, edited or deleted from any web browser.
- Web-based database application using ColdFusion
- New course resource pages can be created in a matter of minutes
- Password protection keeps others from editing the resources
- Link categories and links can easily be added, edited or deleted

MATERIALS FOR INSTRUCTORS AND OTHER WEB DEVELOPERS
1995 ONCTS staff have been active in encouraging the use of technology in teaching for over seven years. They have conducted hands-on workshops and have prepared online materials to aid new content creators. Online materials include:
- Step-by-step guides for developing course pages and adding images and digital audio and video
- Organizing your web site
- Audio and video on the web
Online software guides

IMAGE STUDY GUIDE
DEVELOPED 1993-96, IN USEOnline software guides for Adobe Photoshop and 3D Studio (a modeling, rendering and animation program) were created in conjuntion with a computer graphics course taught by current CTS staff in the School of Architecture from 1993 to 1996. While the course is no longer offered, the materials are still heavily used by web users around the world.
